A N Wilson

Another Clarification

Anyone who read my comments in Kate Flett's Radio Times interview (available at all good stockists), which A N Wilson quotes from selectively in his piece in the Daily Mail (12/3/11), will realise they were made in the context of the fictional world of Downton Abbey in which my character, Robert, could be said to run a 'benign dictatorship'. As I have stated elsewhere, in reality the vast majority of the population had an appalling deal in pre First World War Britain. My point was that millions of people in our own troubled times, while not wanting to live in that era, have taken pleasure in escaping to the imaginary world of Downton Abbey for a couple of hours on a Sunday night. And I am with them. I am not, nor will ever claim to be, a social historian. I hope that clears things up.

Click here to find out more about MerlinGiving Back: Any purchases made on Amazon via links from this site benefit Merlin, the international medical relief charity of which Hugh is a patron.

Here's how it works: click on an Amazon-related item (eg a DVD of Downton Abbey) and any completed purchase made on amazon.co.uk or amazon.com during that visit generates a commission for this website, which is then passed on to the charity. You don't even have to buy the item which first took you to the Amazon site. In the 6 months to December 2011, a total of £101.25 was donated to Merlin this way. So, any time you buy anything from Amazon, please consider doing so via this site - you'll be helping a great cause. Thank you.  To find out more about Merlin and Hugh's other charity interests click here.
